Reviews under the new Consumer Protection Act

The long-awaited new Consumer Protection Act was approved on 24 April 2024 and will come into force on 1 July 2024.

From this date onwards, product ratings and reviews should be more objective.

Ratings and reviews are key. If a retailer uses them on its website or social networks, it will be obliged to state whether and how it ensures that they come from consumers who have actually bought or used the product. Reviews should already be objective, coming from real customers. The law does not prohibit reviews from influencers, but these should no longer be lumped together as they are biased.

If a seller displays fake reviews, they risk being fined by the SOI. There is also a risk that the consumer will be able to exercise the right to withdraw from the contract, which can mean an increased risk in the case of smaller eshops or for higher value goods.
